Great Idea to a Great Company: Making Inventions Pay
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (August, 2001)
Author: Lawrence B. Kilham
Average review score:

Putting His Heart Into It
Not another sucker how-to book, this is a delightfully literate memoir of a smart man's journey to develope and market his own gadget, a hand held ozone sniffing device called Eco-Sensor. Guided by his father's example and supported by his loyal wife, Kilham forged bravely past the snapping jaws of a dropping market, fickle financing, parts shortages and personnel problems like security guard Lila's exciting gender transformation. Not just an inventor, Kilham created a highly satisfying business to manufacture and sell his product. He tells a delightful family history along the way.

"Great Idea" won't sell you any tapes and it doesn't flog his product, Eco-Sensor, because that's not his mission. Ever his father's son, Kilham wants to encourage us to be true to ourselves, to keep on through failure and to always, always reach for excellence. You don't have to be an engineer or even a business person to love this book. I could hardly put it down.

A new bible for entrepreneurs
This book is full of wonderful examples of things for the entrepreneur to expect and beware of. I ususally circle a few such key passages in the text of any book, and jot the page numbers inside the cover. I ran out of room to write page numbers!

A must for reading
This is a book written in language that can be understood for all levels by an author who has had the hands on experience it takes to get an idea off the ground. It has definately impacted my thoughts in planning my future process for my company. Highly recommended

just can't put my finger on it
When I looked at the cover of this book, I couldn't even begin to fathom what was inside of it. The story itself is so surreal that it wouldn't even be considered a story by some. The plot (if there is one) is so vauge that I couldn't identify it. And that's what makes ot good! I must read more Ferlenghetti. I have tried my hand at writing such a book, but with no sucess. The text is fresh, not at all dull. Don't try reading this while you're in your right mind, though, and not during the day, either. The scenes that the author creates are sort of harrowing, they linger in your mind, and they stick. Read it in small sections. It took me weeks, but it was worth it.
It is difficult to get used to Ferlenghetti's writing style, but once you're into it, it doesn't let go. It's all sort of like a dream, some parts a nightmare. The ending was hard to understand from my perspective, but it seems to sum everything up. I highly reccomend this book.

random pourings
totally agree with the first reviewer, many more people should be reading this book, expressing as it does a complete subjection to the writer's art and babbling about blowing up to fill a room. like breton perhaps ferlinghetti forgets about popular literary constraints and merely expresses himself in perfect sequences. remember philip quarles in Huxley's point counter point, he says that a good story could come out of one person's seemingly unmemorable journey from the bus stop next to his house and his front room. Ferlinghetti, like so many kids, spends these pages searching for the essence of the female, essentially. yes, read this book when drunk or tired, or both. or neither.

strange stuff but it all makes sense (maybe)
it worries me that no one has written a review for this book yet. they say i'll be the first. i'm ordering this book through amazon, but i read it my first time many moons ago, back when i was reading "watt" by beckett, and a lot of other wierd stuff. maybe it was just a point in my life, but this book spoke to me. wacked out on whatever those crazy beats got whacked out on, consumed by passion and equally consumed by confusion, ranting and pouring it all out on the page, this book is what comes out when you have nothing else to lose. read it. don't try and make sense of it. there is no sense when you are crushed by longing. this is a monument to that feeling you get when being in love makes you a deranged idiot.

How to Sell at Prices Higher Than Your Competitors: The Complete Book on How to Make Your Prices Stick
Published in Paperback by Horizon Pubns (March, 2001)
Authors: Lawrence L. Steinmetz, Roger Dawson, and Jim Cathcart
Average review score:

New Perspectives on Price, Cost, and Value
The title of this book is somewhat misleading because it does not indicate the full scope of what Steinmetz provides...and achieves. True, he suggests all manner of strategies and tactics to overcome sales resistance based almost entirely on price. (He correctly suggests that those who buy ONLY on price be avoided. More about that later.) However, I think this book's greater value is derived from Steinmetz's systematic and convincing repudiation of various self-defeating mindsets. For example, those who are so desperate to sell (and earn some money) that they make all manner of unnecessary concessions. In effect, they negotiate against themselves. (Steinmetz: "Business is a game of margins, not volume.") Here's another example. Those who fulfill what I call the "Self-Fulfilling Negative Prophecy": They are convinced that they cannot succeed and therefore eagerly gather and then cite "evidence" to prove it. (Henry Ford: "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right.") I stopped counting but there must be at least 50 self-defeating mindsets throughout the book which Steinmetz examines and then dismisses.

This is NOT a sales manual. Rather, an extended dialogue between Steinmetz and those readers who are reasonably intelligent, very ambitious, highly energetic, eager to learn what they think they know but don't, not easily discouraged, and -- most important of all -- willing to consider vary carefully what Steinmetz suggests. He requires each reader to set aside their (probably cherished) assumptions about "salesmanship," most of them based on received wisdom that is either obsolete or never true in the first place. Is selling always a "numbers game"? No and Yes. No if the percentage is based on the number of sales made as a result of cold calls to everyone in the telephone directory whose last name begins with "J." Yes if the percentage is based on the number of sales made to carefully selected, pre-qualified prospects. True, there are differences between walk-in sales (e.g. at vehicle dealerships and department stores) and offsite sales (e.g. at the prospect's location). Even so, Steinmetz cites five "cases" (price, quality, service, competence of salesperson, and error-free delivery) which apply to both. I agree completely that "business is a game of margins, not volume." I am also convinced that re-orders (i.e. repeat customers), not merely orders, should be a primary objective. As Steinmetz explains, price may result in one order but quality, service, competence of salesperson, and error-free delivery create and then sustain long-term customer relationships.

Why avoid those who buy only on price? Steinmetz offers nine reasons:

1. Price-buyers take all of your sales time.

2. They do all the complaining.

3. They "forget" to pay you.

4. They tell your other customers how little they paid you.

5. They drive off your good customers.

6. There's not going to buy from you again anyhow.

7. They'll require you to "invest up" to supply their needs -- and then they'll blackmail you for a better price.

8. They'll destroy the credibility of your price and your product in the eyes of your customers.

9. They will steal any ideas, designs, drawings, information, and knowledge they can get their hands on.

There are dozens of such checklists, step-by-step processes, reminders, dos and don'ts, cautions, and value affirmations. throughout the book as well as hundreds of examples of real-world sales situations. Problems and complications are inevitable. Steinmetz identifies the most recurrent ones and explains how to resolve them. Implicit is Steinmetz's pride in what he views as the profession of sales. He is wholeheartedly committed to quality of product and service. He understands the importance of making prudent promises and then keeping every one of them. He has little (if any) patience with whiners, chiselers, corner cutters, liars, and hypocrites. He views providing service to customers as a privilege, indeed as a moral obligation.

Here in a single volume is a wealth of information and wisdom which Steinmetz has accumulated over a period of many years, presented with a non-nonsense writing style enlivened by his wry sense of humor. All of his advice is eminently practical and easily applicable to most sales situation. However, I presume to offer some advice of my own. Read and then re-read the book, highlighting or underlining whatever seems most relevant to your own situation. Then focus on your most urgent needs. That is to say, do not attempt to apply immediately everything you have learned. Experiment. Take a few prudent chances. Over time, I think you will achieve significant improvement of your skills and a stronger sense of pride in how you earn a living. One final point. Not all prospective customers are worthy of your attention and effort. Concentrate only on the ones who are.

LEARN HOW TO MAKE MONEY BY REALLY SELLING
Tells the truth about discount pricing and the type of customers it attracts, not to mention how it taxes your ability to service your customers effectively while eroding your profitability. Learn how you can make more money by saying no to customers who shop by price only. A crucial lesson in sales economics that every sales professional needs to learn in order to be successful and profitable. I just hope my competitors never read it.

One of the best books I've read on pricing
Larry does an outstanding job of presenting the hows and whys of making your pricing stick. In the process he effectively presents the tricks that buyers use to beat prices down (and you can now use them too to save money) and how to combat them, why it is critical to maintain your prices so you have the profits to develop new products, why it takes 50% more volume to bring profitibality back to the same after a 10% price cut, why you can lose 50% of your business and still make as much with a 10% price increase and other important lessons on pricing. Every sales person and every businessman should read this book.

The International Origins of the Federal Reserve System
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (October, 1997)
Author: J. Lawrence Broz
Average review score:

Clear
Broz provides an easy to read text. His premises are clear, leading to true understanding. I've read much on this subject, but never such a complete work. It is as economical as can be expected; and I would argue more general than others have claimed. I highly suggest this book, and thank Dr. Broz for his contribution.

A good blend of theory and historical evidence
Broz's "The International Origins of the Federal Reserve System" is a excellent example of how single-case qualitative empirical research should be done. By providing a detailed formal theory framework, Broz is able to derive specific hypothesis about the development of the Federal Reserve in a manner that is both scientifically rigorous and historically detailed. While comparison with other cases would have been helpful (and neccessary if the model is to be generalized), this book is one of the best qualitative works in political science in general and political economy in particular in years.

Accessible
You can't find a more accessible text for this topic. I have scoured the librarys of academia and find that this text is not only readable and enjoyable, but it is superior in its treatment of subject matter. A look at the index will tell any reader that Mr. Broz's volume is the compleat guide.

Don't miss your chance to read this welcoming introductory text.

Internet Telephone Basics: How to Select, Setup, Use and Optimize Telephone Service through the Internet

Great phone service saver
This is a must for all persons who use telephone service and who wish to save money. This book helps one to appreciate that there is much more to telephone service than just saving money. The explanations and diagrams are great! I strongly recommend this book to all commond users of the telephone.

Good Introduction - Simple
This book is a great introduction on internet telephone service. Before I
saw this book, I thought internet telephone service was only for technical
experts. Now that I've talked on Internet telephone service, I found it
works great. The book is right, getting and using Internet telephone
service is easy.

The bottom line: this is a good basics book on how to get and hook-up
Internet telephone service.

Easy to Understand
This book does an excellent job at explaining Internet telephony in ways that anyone can understand, helping people that would normally make phone calls with a telephone to save a lot of money by calling using technologies powered by the Internet. Diagrams are designed to be intuitive and instructional, and the various photos are helpful as well. Special hints are provided throughout the book to highlight key points and help the user avoid or troubleshoot common areas of difficulty, such as with using firewalls and setting up routers. In summary, the book is great both for the first time user looking for the best solution for their specific situation, and also for more experienced users that want to improve their performance or save even more money on their calls.

John L. Sullivan and His America (Sport and Society)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (April, 1988)
Author: Michael T. Isenberg
Average review score:

A Great Biography
A nicely written biography of a great champion. Isenberg begins with a scholarly discussion of the Irish-American background in which Sullivan was born and extends to the bare knuckle society were he reigned supreme for twelve years. The thorough coverage of Sullivan's career is full of interesting anecdotes of many of the great fighters of the era and you gain real insight into the America of Sullivan's time. But, most importantly, in the end you become genuinely familiar with the man-John L.-himself.

Sullivan Book Review
An interesting account of the champion from Boston. Exhaustive research makes for an excellent read. I enjoyed it.

Isenberg's book on Sullivan is outstanding!
As a boxing writer and historian, I have read hundreds of books on the sport and even authored one. Isenberg's book on the Great John L. is among the best boxing books ever, a very well researched work that dwells into the smallest details of Sullivan both as a fighter and a sociological phenom of his time, the first blue collar sports hero in America.. To end with a cliche: This book is a must read book for fistic fans --Enrique Encinosa

Lawrence Alma-Tadema
Published in Hardcover by Thunder Bay Press (01 August, 2001)
Authors: Edmund Swinglehurst and Lawrence Alma-Tadema
Average review score:

At last I found a great book about Alma Tadema
Perhaps this book is the only one about Alma tadema-the greatest master of Victorian age- which deals with his life and works the way it should be. It contains a great collection of his works as high quality pictures as well as a great biography. Just buy it and see what you have missed all this time.

Perfect!
This is an excellent book - well-printed, with beautiful reproductions of Alma-Tadema's work, and well-written. Too often, art books lump Alma-Tadema generically with the pre-Raphaelites or shun him entirely (because his paintings catered to Victorian tastes). This book is almost, but not quite, too much of a good thing, with an in-depth view of Alma-Tadema's career, especially the mentors and travel experiences that shaped his style. Very early paintings and watercolor studies which I had never before seen are included, and I paticularly like the side-by-side presentation of watercolor studies with finished oils of the same scene. Alma-Tadema was a skilled artist whose lush, decorative style and atmospheric historical scenes prefigured the art of Maxfield Parrish. It's about time that a collection of this quality has become available.

Buy it before it's late
This is the best book I've ever seen about alma-tadema. Includes high quality pictures of his masterpieces. If you love Almatadema's works you should have this special book.
